Level 6 NPA – Sports Coaching
These National Progression Awards (NPAs) in Sports Coaching are jointly certificated with sportscotland and the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).
At SCQF level 6, the NPA introduces learners to the role of a coach within a supervised environment. By leading the planning, delivery and review of coaching sessions, learners will experience the preparation of the coaching environment, and the needs and expectations of participants while meeting required safety standards.
The course is a mix of practical delivery and theoretical learning related to excellent coaching practice and learners will be required to research, describe and explain various influences and attributes that coaches must have in order to be effective in their role. Coaching Philosophy’s, Learning Strategies and Participant Needs are amongst some of the topics covered to ensure that successful learners are prepared to deliver high quality coaching sessions across a range of ages and activities within the local community.
Content of the Course
Candidates will complete 2 units and each relevant assessment outcome on;
Course Entry Requirements
Suitable candidates for this course will be S5 or S6 pupils who have achieved a strong pass in Level 5 Sport and Recreation or S6 pupils with a strong pass in Higher PE. All candidates should have a particular interest in sports coaching.

- Enhance the candidate’s prospects for their continuing education in the industry or outside it by the development of transferable skills.
- Offer opportunities to develop core skills in a setting relevant to the industry.
- Allow candidates to acquire some of the basic skills and knowledge required by the industry.
