Business Education
Meet the Team
What We Do
In the Business Education department, we prepare young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in an ever‑changing digital and economic world. Our courses offer engaging, hands‑on learning experiences that help learners understand how businesses operate and how technology shapes modern workplaces. We aim to offer a wide variety of courses to meet the needs and interests of our students.
We focus on building essential meta‑skills such as communication, creativity, problem‑solving, teamwork and digital literacy. Through practical tasks, real‑world scenarios and industry‑relevant software, pupils learn to think critically, work independently and collaborate effectively.
Across our subjects we aim to develop responsible, enterprising and forward‑thinking learners who are equipped for further study, employment and life beyond school. Our goal is to inspire curiosity, encourage ambition and support every young person to reach their full potential.

Access to Resources
All lesson outlines, including PowerPoints, notes, tasks and relevant resources, are posted on Teams each week. This ensures learners can catch up on any missed work and access materials from home for revision. All home learning is issued as Assignments on Teams and automatically added to student calendars, enabling reminders and email notifications. All class materials are also available in the Files/Shared section on Teams. Meta Skills Our department is committed to developing key meta‑skills in learners at every stage of their journey. |
Wider Opportunities and Interdisciplinary Learning Projects
The Snack Attack Challenge
Our S1 learners work in teams to design and market a new Fairtrade snack. The winning group from each class collaborates with the Home Economics department to refine their recipe, and the whole class gets the chance to bake the final product. And of course, remember to let your Business teachers sample the results!
#DigiInventors Challenge
This is a competition close to our hearts – having won the competition three times! The only school in Scotland to have done so! The #DigiInventors Challenge is a national competition where learners work in teams to design a creative digital solution to a real health or wellbeing problem. It helps young people develop digital, entrepreneurial and problem‑solving skills while exploring careers in the fast‑growing digital health and care sector. We link with the Computing department who support students design wireframes for their app/design. You can find out more information about this exciting opportunity for S2 Admin & Enterprise students here: https://www.dhi-scotland.com/digiinventors
The Apprentice Challenge
Learners in S2 take on this project as a team challenge, working together on a task inspired by The Apprentice. Each group follows the same brief and develops a product from scratch — creating a business plan, designing the branding, organising the finances, and delivering a final pitch. Every year we see impressive ideas, with pupils showcasing real creativity, teamwork, and thoughtful planning. A winner is chosen from each class, earning a certificate and a prize for their hard work
Climate Change Animation Competition
Pupils put their creativity and ICT skills to work by designing an animation using PowerPoint’s 3D Models and Morph transitions. Their task is to produce an engaging, imaginative animation that delivers a clear message about climate change. A winner is chosen from each class, and the finalists are then judged by the Geography department, who select an overall S2 champion.
Stock Market Game
The Stock Market Game run by SIMA gives pupils a fun, hands‑on way to learn how investing and the economy work. Using a virtual £100,000, students buy and sell shares based on real market data, seeing how their choices affect their portfolio over time. It turns financial literacy into an interactive challenge, helping pupils build confidence with money, understand risk, and develop smart decision‑making skills — all while competing to see who can grow their investments the most.
Provost’s Enterprise and Innovation Challenge
A team from each of the 8 secondary schools will compete in the South Ayrshire Provost’s Enterprise Challenge – presenting a pitch for their innovative idea/product to a panel of ‘Dragons’. They will be judged on:
