Marr College Building our Curriculum: Planning for 2026/27
Every year, we evaluate, review and refine our curriculum offer to allow our pupils to continue to experience a wide and varied curriculum whilst supporting their learning and wellbeing. We will continue to support and challenge our young people to achieve their potential and be proud of their past and ambitious for their future.
Our Broad General Education (BGE) through S1 - 3 is entirely underpinned by the principles of Scotland’s Curriculum which allows our young people to develop their knowledge, skills to allow our young people to be successful learners, responsible citizens, effective contributors and confidents individuals. Our BGE provides opportunities for development of skills for learning, life and work and an introduction to Project Based Learning (PBL). This year our S1 pupils experienced single teacher delivery in Social Subjects and Science including the introduction of double periods which received positive feedback from all stakeholders.
Our pupils in S1 – 3 experience a curriculum with personalisation and choice through skills and learning options which allow preparation for transition to specialism in the upper school. The school has worked in partnership with all stakeholders, and continues to do so, to build a curriculum, including developing new pathways, that strives to meet the needs of each and every learner.
Marr College, in consultation with students; staff; parents and learning partners, has developed a flexible Senior Phase, through free choice of options, which allows all learners to achieve the qualifications and experiences, skills and capacities necessary to achieve a positive and sustained destination at the end of the fourth, fifth or sixth year.
Our Senior Phase curriculum should prepare our students for challenges and issues that they face in today’s world whilst providing meaningful, challenging and relevant learning experiences at all levels. In South Ayrshire all schools are following “32+1” structure which means that Monday and Tuesday are 7 period days and Wednesday – Friday are all 6 period days. Our young people are able to study a wide variety of subjects enhancing their knowledge and skills through National Qualifications, SCQF Awards and through our Skills Academy ‘The Hive’ and work placements.
