Physical Education
What we do
In PE our aim is to develop the health and well being of young people at Marr College. We do this by offering our pupils a varied and exciting curriculum both in the Broad General Education and Senior Phase. Pupils get the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities including individual sports, team games and aesthetic activities.

S1-3 Broad General Education
Pupils in S1-3 will participate in the following activties:
Basketball, Volleyball, Netball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Gymnastics,
Creative Dance, Social Dance, Fitness, Rugby, Hockey,Football and Athletics.
In S1 and S2 pupils receive 3 periods of PE per week.
In S3 pupils receive 2 periods of PE per week.
During BGE PE lessons pupils will cover the Health and Well Being Experiences and Outcomes as well as The Significant Aspects of Learning.
S1-2 School of Rugby Programme
This programme is delivered by local SRU Development Officers and is open to all S1-2 pupils. The School of Rugby gives pupils the opportunity to train in a rugby environment as part of their school curriculum. The course aims to develop the following areas:
National 4 & 5 Physical Education
When studying National 4/5 Physical Education pupils will learn about their own performance and how it can be improved. Pupils will learn about the factors that impact on their performance and they will implement and evaluate approaches to develop performance further.
All pupils must pass the following internal unit assessments:
Pupils studying National 4/5 will get the opportunity to participate in a range of physical activities. They will have the opportunity to choose their activity for the single performance assessment. For example, this could be an activity they compete in out with school.
Higher Physical Education
When studying Higher Physical Education pupils will learn about their own performance and how it can be improved. Pupils will learn about the factors that impact on their performance and they will implement and evaluate approaches to develop performance further.
All pupils must pass the following internal unit assessments:
When studying Higher PE pupils will participate in the following activities:
However, pupils will have the opportunity to choose their activity for the single performance assessment. For example, this could be an activity they compete in out with school.
Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA)
The SCQF Level 5 Award in Community Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to lead groups of people in sport/activity, under indirect supervision.
The qualification teaches generic leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport. It is a fun and practical qualification with no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit.
Pupils will be required to teach/coach small groups of children within BGE classes at Marr College, feeder Primary Schools and local sports clubs (10hrs minimum).
The CSLA is an excellent vocational course that develops life and work skills.
Pupils undertaking this course must have a genuine interest in working with others and a passion for physical activity.

- Lifestyle Management: Nutrition, Hydration, Rest, Activity Management
National 4 & 5 Physical Education
When studying National 4/5 Physical Education pupils will learn about their own performance and how it can be improved. Pupils will learn about the factors that impact on their performance and they will implement and evaluate approaches to develop performance further.
All pupils must pass the following internal unit assessments:
- Performance Skills (Pupils will be required to demonstrate a comprehensive range of movement and performance skills in two physical activities)
- Factors Impacting Performance (Written assessment based on various outcomes)
- Single Performance: This is a "one off" performance in an activity of the pupil’s choice. Pupils are required to plan for and evaluate this performance. The single performance is internally assessed by PE staff at Marr College. 60% of overall mark.
- Portfolio: A written piece of work based around performance improvement in a particular activity. It is completed in school and externally marked by the SQA. 40% of overall mark.

All pupils must pass the following internal unit assessments:
- Performance Skills (Pupils will be required to demonstrate a broad and comprehensive range of complex movement and performance skills in two physical activities)
- Factors Impacting Performance (Written assessment based on various outcomes)
- Single Performance: This is a "one off" performance in an activity of the pupil’s choice. Pupils are required to plan for and evaluate this performance. The single performance is internally assessed by PE staff at Marr College. 60% of overall mark.
- Written Exam: 1.5 hrs made up of 2 sections. 40% of overall mark.

- Badminton
- Volleyball
- Hockey
