History
Why choose History?
National History
Students can take National History in S4 – S6. The course is offered at National 3, 4 and 5 level to suit all ages and stages.
At all levels there are 3 core topics: the Scottish Wars of Independence 1286 - 1328; the Atlantic Slave Trade 1770 - 1807; and The Crusades 1071 - 1192.
The National course offers progression to another National level; to Higher History; or to employment or training.
Through studying History you will develop the following subject skills and knowledge:
· developing and applying skills, knowledge and understanding across contexts from Scottish, British and European and World history
· evaluating the origin, purpose, content and/or context of historical sources
· evaluating the impact of historical developments
· presenting information in a structured manner
· evaluating the factors contributing to historical developments
· drawing reasoned conclusions supported by evidence
· with limited guidance, researching and analysing historical information
· developing a detailed and accurate knowledge and understanding of historical themes and events in Scottish, British, European and World contexts
There are two parts to the course: a question paper exam worth 80 marks; and an assignment worth 20 marks. The assignment is completed during class time.
Higher History
Students can take Higher History in either S5 or S6.
In Higher History there are 3 core topics: Britain 1851 – 1951; The Crusades 1071 – 1204; and The Scottish Wars of Independence 1249 – 1328.
The Higher course offers progression to the Advanced Higher History course or to further study, employment and/or training.
Through studying History you will develop the following subject skills and knowledge:
· developing and applying skills, knowledge and understanding across contexts from
British, European and world, and Scottish history
· evaluating the origin, purpose, content and context of historical sources
· evaluating the impact of historical developments and synthesising information in a well-structured manner
· evaluating the factors contributing towards historical developments, and drawing well-reasoned conclusions supported by evidence
· researching and analysing historical information
· developing a detailed and accurate knowledge and understanding of complex historical issues in British, European and world, and Scottish contexts
There are three parts to the course: an essays question paper exam worth 44 marks; a sources question paper worth 36 marks; assignment worth 30 marks. The assignment is completed during class time.
Advanced Higher History
Students can take Advanced Higher History in S6.
Students complete one topic on discussion with the course teacher. At Marr we have previously presented students for the following topics: Northern Britain: from the Iron Age to 1034; Germany: from Democracy to Dictatorship, 1918–1939; and Russia: from Tsarism to Stalinism, 1914–1945.
Advanced Higher History promotes the following skills:
· developing and applying skills, knowledge and understanding from a chosen historical field of study
· evaluating a wide range of historical sources which have some complex features, taking into account their provenance, content and historical and historiographical contexts
· engaging with the views of a range of historians
· sustaining a coherent line of argument
· drawing well-reasoned conclusions supported by detailed evidence
· identifying appropriate research issues
· planning and managing a complex programme of research
· sourcing, collecting and recording appropriate and reliable information
· evaluating, analysing and synthesising evidence
· understanding how to organise, present and reference findings using appropriate conventions
