Why Study Accounting?
Accounting is one of the backbones of the modern world, and the backbone of business. The financial services industry is a growing sector in Scotland, it employs almost 100,000 people directly and around the same again indirectly. It generates around £8 billion for the Scottish economy which is more than eight per cent of Scottish onshore economic activity. Accounting related courses are therefore an excellent choice for students looking to develop employability skills.
If you think chartered accountants spend their lives confined to their desks, then think again. They are sitting on the boards of multinational companies, testifying in court and advising governments, as well as supporting charities and businesses from every industry all over the world.
As one of the oldest and safest professions choosing to study accountancy will certain give you a wide variety of career options once you graduate such as: investment manager, Chief Finance Officer, Auditor, Tax Manager, Budget Analyst, Bookkeeper, Payroll Clerk, Forensic Accountant etc. It can also be useful if you are thinking of owning you own business one day.

Higher Accounting (S5/6)
If you enjoy working with numbers, have strong numeracy skills, are good at problem solving, have a keen eye for detail and good teamwork skills then Accounting could be the perfect choice for you.
Content
During the award, you will gain a variety of knowledge and skills including the following.
Skills
Studying accountancy will help develop many key transferable and employability skills such as problem solving, numeracy, commercial awareness, communication, organisation, financial management, analytical, ICT skills and teamwork.
Assessment
The assessment for this course is made up of a closed book, timed assignment and a final question paper. Both completed using ICT.
Wider Achievement
Student Investor Challenge: Students from compete in this national competition run by the London Institute of Banking and Finance. Students compete for a top prize of an all-expenses paid trip to New York City. For more information: https://www.studentinvestor.org/
ICAEW BASE Challenge: Students in S5/6 compete in a national competition run by the Institute of Chartered Accounting for England and Wales. This is completed in teams and provides students with personalised feedback on their performance to help with CVs and UCAS applications. - How to budget effectively.
- How to manage and value inventory.
- How to analyse investment opportunities and make decisions based on your findings.
- How to calculate job costing, service costing and process costing statements.
- Problem solving, numeracy, ICT, decision making and communication skills.

NPA in Accounting Level 6 (S4/5/6)
The NPA in Accountancy introduces you to fundamental knowledge and skills relating to the study of accountancy, and allows for progression to other accounting-related courses in both the further and higher education sectors, as well as providing progression to or within employment. It develops key skills and knowledge relevant to the Higher Accounting course should you choose to study this the following year.
The course is only available at SCQF level 6 (Higher equivalent). In order to pass the course you need to complete a mix of both open and closed book unit assessments throughout the year – unlike Higher Accounting - there is no assignment or final exam.
During the award, you will gain a variety of knowledge and skills including the following.
