The work to refurbish and extend Marr College will be starting soon. Planning permission has now been received and the developer is gearing up to start the main works after the October break.
You will have noticed that some work has already started. We have refurbished and converted one of the existing labs into a general teaching classroom to demonstrate how the rooms in the historic building will look. Images from the sample room can be viewed here.
Work has also started on the oval lawn at the front of the historic building. The contractor has started to clear the ground and put in foundations and services for the temporary accommodation that will be used for decant in October. This work will continue over the summer holidays along with a number of other work packages. By the time pupils and staff return after the summer break the school grounds will look entirely different.
The contractor’s compound will be built next to the PE Block and the fencing around the site where the new extension will be constructed will also be erected. The car park next to the cycle path will also be extended. To help pupils, staff and parents/carers, we have produced some images to show how the school grounds will look after the holidays. These can be viewed here.
Traffic Management Arrangements
The number of vehicles entering and leaving the school grounds will dramatically increase as soon as the work starts. In order to manage the flow of traffic and ensure a safe environment for the pupils, staff and visitors, it is proposed to introduce a number of measures.
1. The site traffic will be directed to use the right hand access road that runs parallel to the golf course and around the back of the building. No other vehicles will be permitted to use this route.
2. Vehicular access to the school grounds during school hours will be restricted to staff, visitors, school buses and delivery vehicles. To facilitate this, a controlled barrier will be erected across the entrance to the school access road. Parents and carers are asked to respect this arrangement and use alternative arrangements to drop-off and pick-up pupils. Pedestrians will still be able to access the school grounds from the main entrance. Work has recently been carried out to widen and resurface the access road to the playing fields and we would recommend using the car park next to the pavilion as a pick-up/drop-off point during the works.
3. The main entrance to the school grounds off Dundonald Road will be monitored during peak times over the initial few weeks after the summer break to ensure compliance with these measures.
4. Pedestrians will not be able to access to the school grounds from the path across the golf course. This entrance will be closed off by the construction site for the duration of the works. Pupils from Muirhead are asked to use alternative routes to and from the school. There are a number of other routes that are commonly used which pupils from the Muirhead area can choose to take if they so wish. The Council would recommended that pupils either walk down Central Avenue and along Dundonald Road and enter the school grounds at the main entrance or they can use the new path across the playing fields that links Muirhead with the sports pavilion. This is a shorter route and will also be lit in time for the school returning after the summer break.
