This is a great opportunity for anyone who is a fan of Alex Rider. The Boswell Book Festival takes place at Dumfries House, near Cumnock, 4-6 May 2018. There are still tickets available for this event as well as his event on Sunday for adult and older writers.
At the start of March we celebrated World Book Day here at Marr. In the lead up to the big day students in S1 and S2 were using their library time to be creative.
S1 pupils had to write a short short story, in fact a story so short that it could be tweeted in one tweet! This was no mean feat for our keen writers. All the stories were then tweeted by the school librarian and can be found on the twitter feed @marrlibrary
S2 pupils were given a different challenge. They were asked to create a story plan using a new method. Working in groups they were given a story plan sheet and asked to plot a story from beginning to end with one main event as the climax to the story. Their story could be set anywhere and at anytime however Miss Owens has one stipulation: The characters had to already exist in other stories. Pupils had lots of fun with this.
All pupils were given their World Book day tokens which can still be exchanged up until the 31st March.
Miss Owens recently worked alongside tutor time teachers to deliver a series of lessons created to commemorate Holocaust Memorial day and also develop students research skills. The first lesson saw S1-3 students shown 8 holocaust memorials from around the world. They were asked to note down their thoughts, feelings and questions about each of these memorials. This information was then used by Miss Owens to create a research plan for each of the memorials. Each tutor time class then had to research a specific memorial over three weeks, using only the information provided by Miss Owens. This task developed their information retrieval skills, as well as reading skills. They worked together as a class to create a presentation about that memorial.
The series of lessons ended with a year assembly where students work was showcased in a presentation delivered by Miss Owens. This special assembly also had two senior pupils, Ben and Nicola, who are the Lessons from Auschwitz Ambassadors, speak at length about their recent trip to Auschwitz. They both gave a very moving and emotional recount of the time they spent both at Auschwitz and the conferences they had attended before hand. Below is the presentation shown at the S3 assembly and the images shown by our Lessons from Auschwitz Ambassadors.
As promised we have two new FULL series in the library for all students to borrow. The first is the Young Samurai series by Chris Bradford. An action packed story of a boy who is shipwrecked in 1611 off the coast of Japan and his only hope is to train to become a Samurai warrior. This is an amazingly researched series written by a man who knows his way around a samurai sword. Full of adventure and intrigue.
The second is The Spooks Stories by Joseph Delaney. These creepy, scary thrilling adventures follow the story of Tom Ward, the seventh son of the seventh son as he take up the post of apprentice to the Spook. He learns quickly as he faces witches, demons and boggarts and discovers that enemies can become allies and some allies can not be trusted. A great series and one that is sure to have you cowering under the covers if you read at night!
Both series are proving popular with students in school. Miss Owens is happy to place a hold on any title for those wishing to read these books.
The library can be found at the top of the first flight of stairs, nestled in the middle of the English department. We have books galore in every genre, style and size, perfect for the avid reader and those who are a bit more reluctant to pick up a book.
The School Library is staffed by a chartered librarian, Miss Catherine Owens.
The catalogue offers staff and pupils access to stock held across the whole of South Ayrshire, which they can borrow and return here at Marr College. To further enhance the library experience we have an app that can be downloaded for apple and android devices, where eBooks and audio books can be easily borrowed.
