Linguachef 2018

On Friday 22nd June, four of our pupils attend the Grand Final of Linguachef 2018 and came home as the winners! The team consisted of four excellent chefs and were in competition against the following national finalists : Paisley Grammar, Larbert High school and St Machar Academy.
They presented and cooked their Albondigas recipe to William McCurrach OBE, Curriculum Head at City of Glasgow College, Zoltan Szabo, twice Scottish chef of the year award and executive Head Chef of Blythswood Square and Fhiona Mackay ,Director of SCILT and CISS.
Here is the judging criteria:

Effective communication (fluency, accuracy, clarity, pronunciation in the target language, Spanish in their case)
Creativity within the recipe
Attractive presentation of recipe
Appropriate and accurate culinary vocabulary

They worked as a team in the professional kitchen and produced an absolute stunning dish, with amazing flavour! They were able to discuss the wide range of vocabulary they had acquired in the process of creating this recipe and the cooking skills they had gained.
Fantastic performance and a huge well done to all involved!

Success at Go4Set

On the 14th of March two groups of S2 pupils attended the Go4Set Engineering Development Trust Competition at Dumfries House. For 10 weeks, both groups worked tirelessly on their STEM projects, producing a professional report and model, which they presented to their assessors on the competition day. Rachel Byrne, Jenna Shelley, Rosie Milne and Kathleen Milne created a simulation of a novel system that locates books using radio-frequency identification. Ellie Cook, Emma Taylor, Poppy Nicolson, Amy Nixon, Rosie Rossi and Jake Murray developed a new recycling system for use in schools based on a method used in Singapore. The recycling group in particular wowed the judges and they managed to score the ‘Outstanding Teamwork Award’!

We like to celebrate student success in every part of their lives here at Marr. We were recently notified by a parent of success our pupils had outside of school. Jenna and Eve Beswick both competed today at the Scottish Indoor Athletics Championships and represented Ayr Seaforth U13 Girls at the 4x 200 m relay. They won the Gold Medal and also achieved a Club Record. (K Beswick, 25th February)

We are delighted that the girls achieved such fabulous results at a national championship and are happy to celebrate this success with them. Here they are pictured with their teammates.

We would also like to remind parents and pupils to keep us informed of all success our pupils have, whether in school or with local clubs.

The Creation Station @Marr College

Creation Station Unveiled

We have a new project here at Marr College that was officially opened recently
The new enterprise, ‘Creation Station’ allows students to invent and then produce all manner of hot drinks and smoothies, the baristas then serve the drinks to customers. South Ayrshire Council has been working with the Prince's Trust and Developing Young Workforce Ayrshire (DYW) to get the business up and running.
£7,130 has been invested in the scheme by the Prince's Trust Development Awards (through the Cash Back for Communities programme) and DYW Ayrshire with the funds used to buy equipment vital to make this new enterprise a success. A further £5,640 of funding has been provided to set up a nail bar appropriately named “Style and File” which will be launched in May.

Ayrshire College is also helping by training the young people so they’re ready when the customers start rolling in.

Councillor William Grant, Lifelong Learning Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "These projects are ideal, not only do they provide practical experience which the young people can use when they leave school, they also build confidence and transferrable skills. There is a lot of emphasis on academic achievement in schools but practical experience can be important too. There is a thriving hospitality sector in and around Troon so this training could be vital as a gateway to employment.”

The young people at Marr College will hopefully take part in more of these initiatives going forward.
Jamie Kerr (14) S3 said:” I want to be a mechanic but I will be dealing with customers so this experience will help me. We have already served Troon Rotary Club who came to the school and we are getting really good.”
Emily McCalmont (14) S3 said: “This will give me more confidence to deal with people. My maths will also get better as we need to set prices and cost supplies”

Claire Baird, DYW Ayrshire Project Executive said “We are absolutely delighted to support such an innovative project and are very impressed by the way the project has been implemented with the full involvement of the young people.”

Walter Smith, Prince’s Trust Ayrshire Chair said: “The “Creation Station” project will develop the core skills that potential employers are looking for in young people including confidence, communication, commitment, customer services and courtesy.”

Graeme Hobson, Acting Head Teacher at Marr College said: "Improving customer care skills could make a big difference to those taking part. They are also learning how to set up and run a business which is inspirational. I’m looking forward to the nail bar launching in May as we give even more of our young people the chance to succeed beyond the classroom."

Micro Tyco success

Micro Tyco Success

Our S2 students took part in the Micro Tyco Challenge last term and were very successful. They did a fantastic job - raising £1,443.78. This put them in second place in the Secondary School category for the UK! They will be receiving a trophy and certificates later on in the term. Examples of the items on offer include festive box frames, personalised money pots, S1 Christmas cards, personalised glitter baubles, gift tags, sweetie jars, Christmas cards and a games room run by a team during lunchtime.

The event, run by The WildHearts Foundation, develops entrepreneurial, problem solving, leadership and interpersonal skills - while raising money for a good cause. To date, WildHearts have helped generate investments of over £5 million, funding their work in entrepreneurial education, microfinance and gender equality.

The business department would like to thank everyone who supported the students throughout the challenge.

Poppy (S2) - "I really enjoyed Micro Tyco because I feel like it really improved my entrepreneurial skills and I learned how to successfully promote and advertise a product. I also enjoyed the amount of teamwork that was involved."

Amy (S2) - "Micro-Tyco was really different to anything I had ever done before but I really enjoyed the responsibility that came with it. I also found it really cool that an idea was able to come to life just like in a real business environment."

Emma, Courtney, Rosie and Ellie (CraftyKidz) – “It built up our teamwork skills and brought us together, we also liked that we could be independent and think up our own ideas.”

David Matthews (S2) – “It gives you a chance to have your own business for a month. It is good because you can learn skills so in the future if you want to have a business.”

Former Pupil wins Prestigious Award

Well done to Jack Dickson winner of Sports Personality of the Year at South Ayrshire Sports Council Awards at Ayr Town Hall on 25th October 2017. Congratulations Jack from all at Marr College.

Swimming Success at Summer Championships

Whilst most of us were enjoying lounging by the poolside during the summer, one of our pupils was in the water and smashing her own records. Lucy Grieve in S2 competed at the British Summer Championship in the 13/14 yrs category. She made the finals in both her events, the butterfly 50m and butterfly 100m. In both these races she achieved a new personal best time and was the fastest Scottish girl in the water for both events.

Lucy followed this success by breaking a Scottish record at a swim meet in August. As this meet was accredited she is now the recognised holder of the 13 year old Scottish short course 50m butterfly. It is no wonder that she has been chosen to represent the West District at the Swim England National County Championships in Sheffield during October.

Mrs McGregor-Sloman has personally congratulated Lucy and we all look forward to hearing about the success she has in Oct. Well done Lucy.

Our annual Senior Award Ceremony is coming up. This year we will be back in our newly refurbished assembly hall on Thursday 31st August, 6.30pm. All prizewinners will be notified this week and full details will be published in due course.

DofE recognition

Our pupils progress throughout the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme was recently recognised by South Ayrshire Council. All pupils who were collected an award this year, whether it was bronze, silver of gold, were invited to a reception held at the Princes Royal Suite, Ayr racecourse on 22nd February. Our very own Jennifer McArthur gave an inspiring speech about her experiences over the past few years, completing all the challenges the DofE Award threw at her. As you can see from the images we have a high number of pupils participating in the award here at Marr College.
