Marr College played host to the South Ayrshire Schools’ History Challenge on 11 June. Marr College won the competition last year and the entry produced by the S1 team this year was of an equally high standard. Marr’s team decided to focus upon the theme of the role that Troon played in WWI. As a result of some impressive research, the students were able to share the story of how the Ailsa Shipping Company made an important contribution to the war effort and of how many of its former workers made the ultimate sacrifice at Gallipoli in July 1915. Six schools from South Ayrshire participated in the Challenge and congratulations must go to Ayr Academy who won the competition following an excellent presentation on the Suffragette campaigns in Scotland. Team Marr were runners-up. A big well done to Caitlin, Rachel, Sophie, Sarah, Emma and Jack for all their hard work on behalf of Marr College. S1 Historians have recently been taking part in active presentations about the Battle of the Somme. As well as excellent powerpoint presentations to the class, students have been creative in selecting new and interesting ways to present their knowledge. Here is a selection of work on the Battle, including: a trench cake, a model trench, a 3D lego poster, cupcake battle, a poem from the trenches, and poppy cakes complete with fact flags.
Our S1 students have been learning about WW1 in history: S1 Historians have been studying WW1 and we have been learning about the importance of propaganda during the war. Our task was to create our own propaganda posters to try and persuade men to join the army. We have done this by looking at different themes such as making them feel proud of their country, making them feel guilty for not fighting, showing the army to be a fun adventure, and asking women to step up during the war. Here are some of our posters.(Written by class 1W) |
