Following on from our recent post on the Young Enterprise business idea, Grownade, it is with great delight we can report some early success. On Sunday 19th November they were at the Wintertainment event in Troon. The ‘Grownade Team’  are led by Mrs Thomson in Business Education and their Business Advisor Stephen McNab. The team is managed by Reece Jamieson and is made up of: Marcia Broadfoot, Bethany Stephens, Adam Russell, Craig Allen, Rachel Hughes, Ciara Inglis, Vanessa Riddle and  Liusaidh Ligertwood.

The Grownade is a 100% recyclable and biodegradable shell containing mixed natural seeds with soil. Take the Grownade, shake it to mix the soil and natural seeds, soak it on the top and throw it on to any patch of land and let it grow. It’s gardening made simple! The company has 5 varieties of Grownades;

The day was a huge success and the team sold over 75% of their stock on one day which was brilliant. Not only this but the local community loved their product. They were full of positive comments about both the product and the students themselves. They were a real asset to the school.  The hard work that has gone into the product development and branding has certainly paid off! A huge thanks to Mrs Thomson and Stephen McNab once again for all their hard work.

The Business Team

Our art teacher, Miss Cairns, has been working with her S3 elective class on creating a logo for a community campaign.  She recency received the following letter from a member of the community asking for help in creating a logo for the Dementia friendly community we all live in:

Over the past two months, I have been working with various individuals and organisations in relation to developing Troon, Loans and Dundonald as one Dementia friendly community.  My aim is to raise awareness in our towns and villages, providing training to staff within our shops and businesses, in schools, organising regular events and leisure opportunities for people with dementia and their carers.  I want to develop a community with the desire to support those living with dementia to remain independent for as long as possible.  Central to this is engaging the whole community and I am particularly keen to involve our young people in supporting our older citizens.
 
Already committed are Dr Donald Macaskill, Chief Executive of the Scottish Care, South Ayrshire Council’s Community Engagement Officer, Troon Rotary, Suncourt Care Home, the Development Coordinator of the Little Art School Trust, Troon Churches Together and Troon Business Association.  Alzheimer’s Scotland is also involved.
 
Our Group require a logo.  A brand new design with a strong identity to be displayed in our shops and business which have undergone training, welcoming people with Dementia into their premises.  We will use the logo on leaflets, letterheads, the website, it will be on show in shop fronts and business premises.  And so it will become a very familiar symbol.

Here at Marr College we have been raising awareness, amongst our staff and pupils, of the various ways people can be affected by dyslexia.  Led by M Elliot from SSDT this is part of a nationwide campaign run by Dyslexia Scotland.  There are many ways our staff support the young people at Marr and each other face the challenges dyslexia may, not only in accessing the curriculum but also in day-to-day life.  Below you will find links to a presentation show to everyone in school as well as information about dyslexia friendly formats that all our staff are encouraged to follow. If you have been in school this week and wondered why staff are wearing a blue ribbon, it is part of this campaign.  Parents/carers should not hesitate to contact a member of guidance staff if they have any concerns about their child.

Our career coach Gemma Fraser has organised an information session for students in S4 today. Modern Apprenticeships - session delivered by South Ayrshire Council- information about upcoming vacancies, the recruitment process and apprenticeships in general.
