Well done to Luke Light and Rebekah Jack who last night advanced the to the next stage of the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament – Scotland’s biggest senior competition. Competing on the night were Williamwood High School, Prestwick Academy, Marr College and Mearns Castle High School who also hosted the event. The team now go on to the next round which takes place sometime in January at a time to be confirmed.
This success follows on from the triumph of Molly MacDougall and Chloe Russell who won the annual Victim Support Public Speaking competition at UWS on Wednesday evening by delivering powerful speeches on the topics of rape and sexual assault. The girls were commended for their bravery in tackling such emotive subjects, their thorough research undertaken in preparation and the excellent delivery of their presentations. As a result, the girls were awarded a £50 book token each as well as a silver commerative plate with their names engraved as winners. On top of this, the girls were given a cheque for £500 for Marr College and the school will soon be the recipient of the competition trophy/shield once Marr’s name has been added. S6 pupils have organised a Foodbank initiative for South Ayrshire in Marr College in the run up to Christmas. Pupils received a lesson in Tutor time and are being encouraged to bring in donations to their Tutor time teacher over the next few weeks. Prizes are available for the tutor time class with the most donations so please remember to take part in this worthy initiative.
Many thanks on behalf of Claudia Kuhler, Natalie McKay and India Beckwith and all of the S6 students involved. Click below to view the presentation with details of what can be donated etc. At 11am on the 11th November Marr College, like many schools across the country, fell silent for two minutes to remember those who have died in war. Staff and Pupils were guided through remembrance day by a Tutor Time lesson planned by the history department. Everyone was asked to think about why we remember, who we remember and whether the day should be a sad one or not. Their thoughts were then recorded on a red poppy and the librarian displayed them in a striking display in the school library.
45 Marr pupils attended the Ayrshire Cross Country Championships at Irvine Beach Park on Tuesday 27th October. We had a number of successes on the day:
S1 Boys Team Bronze Medal S2 Boys Team Gold Medal S2 Boys Individual Bronze Medal: Logan Cotter S3 Girls Individual Silver Medal: Caitlin Chilton. Well done to everyone who represented Marr on what turned out to be a lovely sunny day! |
